A SMALL STREAM WITH MANY RAPIDS The Tuhkajoki is a small stream flowing into Lake Jormasjärvi from the west. Beginning in Lake Kolmisoppi, the steep profile of the Tuhkajoki drops nearly 35 metres over the course of two rapids. The Niskalankoski rapid begins immediately at the lake outlet. A stretch of slower water follows, with the next steep section beginning at Tuhkakylä village and churning down for a length of two kilometres. For the rest of its course, the river flows in a succession of mild currents towards Lake Jormasjärvi.  White-water fishing is concentrated near the bridges,...

Two popular, small-scale waterways maintained with stocking East of the Sotkamo municipality centre, in the vicinity of Tipasoja and Lonta villages, flow two parallel lake-and-river systems from north to south. Both empty into the large lakes of Sotkamo. The Lontajoki drains into Lake Sapsojärvi and the Tipasjoki into Lake Kiimasjärvi. As both rivers belong to the same fishing area, a single licence offers the angler the opportunity to fish dozens of interesting rapids. The most popular rapids along the Tipasjoki can be reached by car. Signposts on the Tipasoja road leading to the...

A LARGE RIVER MAINTAINED WITH SALMONOID STOCKING Lake Ontojoki drains the large waterways in the Kuhmo area into the lakes of Sotkamo. Between the two power plants flows a stretch of river with voluminous currents, nearly ten kilometres in length. The populated areas are concentrated some distance away in the village of Ontojoki, the river flowing through forest for its entire length. The Ontojoki is a large, interesting river for the angler. With no proper rapid along its...

KAJANA CLUB  JORMASJOKI RIVER: Nymph fly fishing  A POPULAR LOCATION AMONG WHITE-WATER ANGLERS The Jormaskoski rapids flow through rural scenery. Despite being populated along its course, the river runs in a depression amid meadows and field, allowing the angler to fish undisturbed. However, anglers should take note of the fences bordering the fields and a number of saunas along the river. No fire pits are available on the rapids, but a maintained lay-by on the main road lies conveniently at a point about halfway down. Fishing beside the bridge is recommended first, followed by...

FISHNG GROUNDS IN A BEAUTIFUL RURAL SETTING  Torvenkoski rapid The Torvenkoski and Tolosenkoski rapids are the most notable fishing grounds for white-water fishing in the lower reaches of the Uva waterway. Torvenkoski ja Tolosenkoski are a series of two separate rapids, flowing between lakes. Of the two, Torvenkoski is longer and more popular among anglers. Torvenkoski begins from Lake Pieni-Uvajärvi and drains into Lake Iijärvi. The rapid is steep, tumbling down a narrow gorge with a drop of no less than sixteen metres over a stretch of one kilometre. These rapids thunder along in a...

PEACEFUL SMALL STREAMS RIVER HIISIJOKI The Hiisijoki begins in Hiisijärvi, a lake well-known for its beaches. After winding for thirteen kilometres through forest, the river drains into Lake Iso-Pyhäntä. Landscape along the river is extremely varied in relief, with spectacular eskers sloping steeply into the water. Such formations can be found, for example, at the rapid at Laahtaskoski, and at Pahkakoski at the head of the river. The Pahkakoski gorge was formed in the eighteenth century during a drainage operation when, partly through loss of control and partly by accident, the waters escaped...
