Although competing lure fishers make outrageous pike catches in the bays surrounding Niskaselkä year after year, the fish that really attracts them is the trout. Zander are less frequently encountered in the Niskaselkä area than in the easternmost part of Lake Oulujärvi. Trout A long bank off Säräisniemi Point has an extensive reputation for trout. Similar long luring grounds are found stretching from the waters behind Säräisniemi Point across to Manamansalo Island, and from Teeriniemi Point as far as Kaaresjärvi Bay. Many trout lurers praise the northern bank off Kuostonsaari Island....

LAKE KIANTAJÄRVI IS KNOWN FOR ITS VENDACE AND SALMON, VUOKKIJÄRVI FOR ITS PIKE   LAKE KIANTAJÄRVI Some 50 kilometres long and measuring slightly over 15,000 hectares, the labyrinthine Kiantajävi lake is a well-recognised fishing ground. The lake is regulated, but water in the summer usually remains at the maximum level. Fish stock has adapted over the decades to lake regulation. The lake sports a good vendace population, which in turn feeds the predatory fish stock that attracts lure fishers.  Trout and landlocked salmon also thrive in the Kiantajärvi lake in addition to pike, perch...

Next door are Sotkamo city centre services and opportunities for refuelling. (Boat harbours are...

There are several mid-sized lakes along the River Emäjoki in Central Kainuu, connected by free flowing rivers and straits. The maze of lakes also varies in depth, and with the main river connecting the lakes and providing fish with nutrition, fish stocks are substantial. Lakes Ristijärvi and Iijärvi The Ristijärvi and Iijärvi lakes and the streams above them form a single, large maze of water bodies suitable for lure fishing. Lake Iijärvi is the larger continuous lake basin. The area is an excellent ground for catching zander, large perch and pike. The vendace population is also excellent....

Lakes Iivantiira, Lentua, Lammasjärvi, Ontojärvi, Kellojärvi and Änätti Kuhmo has plenty of wide, uninhabited lure fishing areas conveniently covered by a single fishing licence. Particularly attractive to lure fishers are the wild and scenic lakes of Iivantiira, Lentua, Änätti, Kellojärvi and Lammasjärvi. Although its water levels are regulated, Lake Ontojärvi is nonetheless a marvellous fishing ground.  The lakes of Kuhmo are rich in fish. Vendace are found in large numbers, while the most coveted fish of prey is the trout. Pike, perch and zander make up the most common catch. The...

Schools of vendace meandering the open waters of Ärjänselkä serve to fatten the fish that prey on them. Pike are abundant in the bays, while zander, perch and trout thrive on the sandy banks in mid-lake. Pike and zander The most well-known pike fishing grounds can be found around the edges of Ärjäselkä.  Troll fishers remember the shoals off Vuottoniemi Point, Myllylahti Bay, the underwater pits between Ärjänsaari Island and Lapinniemi Point, the tip of the shallows off Selkäniemi Point, around the islands in Pehkolanlahti Bay, and especially the southern side of Neuvosenniemi Point....

The fish stock of Lake Oulujärvi could be described as follows: salmonoids in the west, abundant pike and zander in the east.  The zander is common enough in Paltaselkä to have surpassed the vendace as the point of interest for professional fishing. Zander Zander should be lured in the evening or at night near the edges of the deeps. The zander is a sedentary fish that spends almost its entire life in one area. Lure fishers have caught trout, for example, on the northern bank off Toukka Island and off the Siniluoto islet near the village of Koutaniemi; off Mutoudenniemi Point; in the...

Pike the surest catch For the summer holidaymaker, the surest catch will be pike. The pike population of Lake Oulujärvi is abundant and fairly evenly distributed throughout the lake. This is the most common lure fishing catch. The number of pike in the lake is illustrated by the fact that those intending to win at the European Pike Championships must lure some 100 kilos of pike in a day. Luring pike is always worthwhile because the species is not fussy over weather, and can be enticed to bite even in the heat of midsummer. In the summer, small pike live close to the shore, while the whoppers...
